Nighttime Nature Walks

Barn Owlets “branching” to strengthen their wings

Join Magnuson Nature Educators to discover just “whoo” is up and about in the park during nighttime hours!  Each walk includes a presentation on its special theme, along with exciting nighttime “nature detective” work!  All ages are welcome. We keep a pace that is comfortable for children, and supply binoculars and other exploration supplies for children and adults.

Register in advance by calling Magnuson Community Center at 206-684-7026. Drop-ins are welcome, but pre-registration ensures that there will be a spot for you!

OWLS AND OWLETS!

Saturday June 13th from 8:30 pm – 10 pm

The hours just before and after sunset are when Magnuson’s resident Barn Owls are most active around their nest boxes.  Spring nesting season is a great time to learn about owls and their owlets, and all their “super sensory powers”!  We’ll supply binoculars, owl pellet dissection supplies, and other materials to use while we explore the Historic District and other nearby park areas where owls reside. Please bring a small flashlight.

Starting Location: Magnuson Community Center  7110 62nd Ave NE, Seattle WA 98115 (Park in the lot just south of the building)

BATS AND BEAVERS AND MORE, OH MY!

Saturday August 8th from 8:30 pm – 10 pm

A warm summer evening is the best time to observe Magnuson’s bat population as they forage back and forth over the wetland ponds. It’s also an excellent time to get a glimpse of the resident (and very busy) Beavers as they tend their lodge and dams, and stock their underwater “kitchen”! And “whoo” knows what else we’ll see! We’ll supply binoculars, a bat detector, and other supplies to use while we explore the wetland trails. Please bring a small flashlight.

Nature Educators: Emily Bishton and Magnuson Nature Docents

Starting Location: Park in lot #E-5, meet at the Central Wetlands Complex entry trail

Fee:  $3/individual or $8/family

Important Note: We request that you do not bring dogs on any of our nature walks unless they are certified guide or therapy dogs, because they result in a much-reduced amount of birds and other wildlife seen throughout the walk.  Thanks for your understanding!
